Amla (Phyllanthus Emblica)
Amla, commonly known as Indian gooseberry is a small tree with leathery leaves and a fleshy fruit. Its name in Sanskrit means ‘the sustainer’ and it is a popular Ayurvedic tonic believed to prolong youthfulness, life, and good memory.
Amla is classically used to provide nourishment to all the tissues in the body and in the Charaka Samhita (ancient text on traditional Indian medicine/ Ayurveda) it is cited as the best medicine to promote resistance to disease, nourish the blood and prevent aging.
Amla is highly nutritious and is an important dietary source of vitamin C, amino acids and minerals.
In animals studies, amla was shown to protect against cellular damage induced by radiation. It also protected against carcinogens and liver damage caused by medicatications. Various other animal and in vitro studies suggest that amla enhances immune system function and can prevent allergy symptoms.
