Mucuna Pruriens, or ‘velvet bean’ is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia that is historically recognised as a nerve tonic, helping our bodies manage stress. Used in Ayurvedic medicine as far back as 1500 BC, mucuna pruriens is one of the few herbs (alongside ginseng, brahmi and amla) known to balance all three of the ‘doshas’ (the three fundamental bodily bio-elements central to the practice).
It is recognised as one of the best food sources of the amino acid ‘L-dopa’, which is a direct precursor to dopamine (a powerful neurotransmitter in your brain involved in mood, alertness and pleasure) and many others. Dopamine also plays an important role in the brain process involved in falling asleep and the REM stage of sleep associated with dreaming.
Mucuna Pruriens acts upon the pineal gland that produces melatonin, the sleep hormone and regular consumption will have a gentle balancing effect on the brain and hormonal systems. Many who take Mucuna Pruriens report more vivid dreams and deeper sleep.
